What Is Your Partner's Body Language Really Saying?
Terez
Most communication experts agree with this surprising statistic: approximately 93-95% of all language is non-verbal. Our facial expressions, stance and hand/arm placement often sub-consciously reveal what we are really communicating to those around us.
This is especially true when it involves our closest interpersonal relationships. Have you noticed when you observe a couple out in public you almost "instinctively" pick up on whether they are happy, or if there is tension in the relationship?
More likely than not, you are picking up on non-verbal cues from the couple's body language.
So, if you are wondering what your partner's body language has been telling you, the following are a few common, but important non-verbal cues and what they mean:
EYE CONTACT
The Good
The old adage "the eyes are the windows to the soul" is very much true. If your partner is making direct eye contact with you, they are letting you know that you have their full attention.
Also, look for what experts call the "triangle" effect. This is when your partner shifts her gaze from one eye to the other. Next, her gaze will proceed to your mouth down to the rest of your body then back to your eyes again. This is a sign she is "checking you out," a great indicator that she is really into you.
The Not-So Good
If he is speaking with you but his eyes are following other activity behind/near you, this means you really do not have his interest nor full attention. Important note: if she is avoiding eye contact with you, it just may mean that she is shy! Be perceptive and use your instincts to determine if this is the case or not.
HAND/ARM PLACEMENT
The Good
If she gently brushes your forearm or shoulder when conversing with you, this means she is enjoying her time with you. Another positive sign is if she is showing you her palms during the conversation. This usually signifies she is being open and receptive.
The Not-So Good
If his arms are folded across his chest when you are speaking to him, this is a good indicator that he is not being very receptive. He is closing himself off.
BODY POSITIONING

The Good
If his body positioning begins to mirror yours, that usually is a sign he is very comfortable in your presence.
The Not-So Good
If his feet are planted apart with his arms folded across his chest, this is a good indicator he wants to avoid any real intimacy. He is "standing his ground" and is unwilling to budge.
As you can imagine, what is NOT being said is often more revealing than what you or your partner may be verbalizing to each other.
