The Simple Rule Failed Relationships Break

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. - Leonardo da Vinci

Have you ever thought "Why can't being in a relationship be just a little easier?"

Still, we human beings are complicated, and sharing life with another is even more so.

But wouldn't it be fantastic if there was just one hard and fast rule to follow to give our relationships even more of a fighting chance?

Here's the good news  - there is a simple rule which, if we applied to our most intimate relationships, would result in much happier unions.

In fact, most of us learned this rule early on in childhood.

The rule goes something like this:  do to others as you would have them do to you.

Some call this simple, powerful philosophy "the golden rule."  Others refer to it as karma, or the law of sowing and reaping.

What goes around comes around.

No matter, the underlying truth is the same.  The best path to more  harmonious, successful dealings with others is to treat them as we would like to be treated.

If we could master this seemingly simple concept in our relationships, what a seismic shift would occur in the levels of happiness and satisfaction we would have!

Recently,  a friend confided in me that after months of experiencing a rough patch in his marriage, he almost ruined it forever by almost having an affair with a colleague.

"Sam, what stopped you?" I asked.  His reply was compelling. "My co-worker and I agreed to act on our mutual attraction we've been sensing for months now.  We actually met at a motel, and I had every intention of going through with it. Then I pictured my wife in the exact same situation I was in,  meeting some bastard in a cheap hotel room. It drove me crazy! I realized what I was about to do. I just couldn't go through with it.  I couldn't put Tori through that. I realized how much I love her, and how much I wanted to fight for us."

Sam and Tori are currently in couples therapy working to save their marriage.

But what if Sam hadn't followed the golden rule in regards to his wife?

If you are seriously struggling with how to make your relationship better, often the simplest advice is the most effective.

The wisdom of the golden rule has transcended the ages for a reason - it works.

So, put its power to work in your relationship.
